Tragic death on Mothers Day of Bayani/NIUSA nurse

Nurse Immigration USA, Bayani Consulting Network and DaVita Dialysis were saddened to learn of the tragic death of Bernardita Pumakis on May 12, 2003. Bernardita interviewed with DaVita in February 2003, during a Bayani job fair in Manila and was offered a position as a staff RN with this prestigous dialysis company. Over 80 qualified RNs interviewed for only 20 positions. The candidates offered positions were experienced RNs, who presented themselves exceptionally well, both professionally and personally.

Bertnardita received her RN in 1982 in Manila. Her nursing career spanned working on a medical ward, a postnatal ward and then, most recently, in her specialty, kidney dialysis. She had over 7 years experience in dialysis, working on a Nephrology Ward, in a Kidney Transplant Clinic and then on an Artificial Kidney Unit. She worked over 12 years abroad in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Bernardita was looking forward to her next adventure of immigrating to the United States with her daughter and working as a teammate for DaVita in Los Angeles, California.

During the breakfast meeting held the day following her DaVita interview and job offer, Bernardita’s warm and sincere personality was apparent. She sparkled with enthusiasm and was quoted as saying, “Just get me there, Sir”.
Bernardita leaves a 12 year old daughter, who lives with her Grandmother and aspires to be a RN like her Mother. She said she was proud of her Mother’s ambition and courage, which is why she wants to follow in her footsteps.
The loss of Bernardita is felt by all of us, because of who she was and because of the dreams she had, which will never be realized.
Nurse Immigration and Bayani Consulting are forming a trust fund for Bernardita’s daughter’s college education. This will allow her to fulfill her dream of becoming a RN like her Mother.
